TECHNOLOGY

SantoSolve‘s IPR and drug development programs are focused on pharmaceutical use of strontium's analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Strontium is a metallic chemical element in the periodic system, and is naturally occurring in the environment and found at very low concentrations in body fluids. It is structurally very similar to calcium, and can substitute for calcium in many biological processes- while in other processes, strontium is known to have calcium antagonistic properties. The biosimilarity of strontium and calcium is being used in marketed drugs for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

The motivation for investigating the potential of strontium as an active substance for the treatment of peripheral pain stems from positive results of experimental use of complex mineral mixtures to treat patients with severe chronic pain conditions. Based on chemical analysis of mineral content it was hypothesized that strontium could have a pain alleviating effect if applied topically. Through a subsequent drug development program SantoSolve has developed 2PX, a topical solution containing strontium and dermal penetration enhancers, as a safe and effective drug for the treatment of several chronic pain conditions.

Strontium is believed to modulate the peripheral pain and inflammation processes through several pathways; potentially both through an interaction with the arachidonic acid cascade and as an ion-channel modulator.

Nerve cell

A nerve cell or neuron is an electrically excitable cell that processes and transmits information by electrochemical signalling. All neurons are electrically excitable, maintaining voltage gradients across their membranes by means of metabolically driven ion pumps, which combine with ion channels embedded in the membrane to generate intracellular-versus-extracellular concentration differences of ions such as sodium, potassium, chloride, and calcium.
